HISTORY/ORIGIN
Although birthstones have been popular around the world for hundreds of years, they are not that common in Norway. As a result, the average Norwegian probably needs to learn their birthstone or the astrological powers they carry with them.
One theory is that birthstones date all the way back to the Book of Exodus in the Bible. The book is about a Hebrew priest who was told to make a special breastplate.
The breastplate had twelve different gemstones, each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Christians also linked the twelve gemstones to the twelve apostles.
Later, sometime during the first century A.D., Romano-Jewish scholar Titus Flavius Josephus assigned the gemstones to the twelve zodiac signs. Each gem was believed to hold the powers of their corresponding zodiac sign, and wearing the stone associated with the constellation which you were born under was a token of good fortune.
